PREMISE: After eleven years of marriage, Lucy discovers that she is pregnant. She has always fantasized about how she would tell Ricky -- but unforeseen circumstances keep interfering. Finally she decides to tell him during a show at the Tropicana.
GUEST CAST: William Hamel (Maitre d'); Richard Reeves (stagehand)
MUSIC: "The Lady in Red," "Rock-a-bye Baby," "We're Having a Baby"
This was the first installment in what would be a seven-episode "story arc," chronicling Lucy's pregnancy and the birth of Little Ricky. It contains one of the most romantic television moments of all time: the scene in which Lucy finally tells Ricky they are expecting a baby. The two characters' affection for each other -- indeed, the two performers' affection for each other -- burned right through the screen and touched the hearts of millions.
The song, "We're Having a Baby (My Baby and Me)" was introduced by the Arnazes' friend -- and one of Lucy's first benefactors -- Eddie Cantor, in his 1941 Broadway musical, "Banjo Eyes." The music was by Vernon Duke, the lyrics by Harold Adamson -- who was hired by Desilu in the spring of 1953 to write the lyrics to the "I Love Lucy" theme.
