Lucy's Granddaughter to Be Queen:

Kate to Preside Over 75th Apple Blossom Festival

April 5, 2002

Carrying on a family tradition, Katharine Desiree Luckinbill, known to friends and family as "Kate," will wear the queen's crown at the 75th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Virginia.

Kate is, of course, the granddaughter of Lucille Ball -- who was the festival's grand marshall in 1964.

"I am excited and honored," Kate, who is 17, told the press recently. "I never thought something like this would happen to me." Kate explained that she has never been to Virginia, and is looking forward to the new experience.

According to one news article, Apple Blossom audiences may get to hear Kate perform. "Music is my life," she said. "I want to be a singer... I plan to go to a conservatory college after high school."

Kate is currently a junior at Professional Children's School in New York City, where the family has an apartment. They also have a family home in suburban Westchester. In her spare time, Kate enjoys volleyball, snowboarding, and -- like most teens -- shopping with her friends. "Regular girl stuff," she says.

Kate, who has four older brothers, is the only daughter of actors Lucie Arnaz and Laurence Luckinbill. Both mom and dad hope to attend the festival, but plans have not yet been finalized.

Lucille Ball died when Kate was only 4. "The memories I have of her are so specific," she says. "I grew up in California and lived there until I was 6 or 7. She was a big part of my life growing up. She lived 15 minutes away and I was at her house every day. My memories of her are very, very vivid."

Lucy made her granddaughter cookies, and they'd watch the cartoon Inspector Gadget together. "Then she'd put me in these silk pajamas. What little hair I had, she'd put up in curlers and she'd put make-up on me."

(In the photo, right, taken in October, 1988, an-almost-4 Kate attended a Hollywood charity benefit with Mom and Grandma Lucy.)

Desi Arnaz, Kate's grandfather, passed away when she was less than 2 years old. "I have no memories of him, but I have a lot of pictures and he's with me."

The 75th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival runs May 2-5; Kate's coronation will be May 3.
