Lucy Stamp

The following was posted on 5/28/02:

From Bill Mentsas:

As a lifelong Lucy fan, I was elated and very pleased with the beautiful US Postage Stamp that was issued last fall in honor of Lucy. I purchased a whole block of those stamps. Would you happen to know who designed that stamp? Was it an original drawing or was it adapted from an actual photograph of Lucy? It is great that her beauty and glamour were captured for posterity on this postage stamp.

Best regards, Bill Mentsas

PS: I am a fellow upstate New Yorker, so that's a wonderful common connection to have with the immortal Lucy!

We agree on all counts! Lucy is immortal, but unfortunately the stamp is not. The post office has announced it is raising the cost of stamps within the next few weeks... and once the postage goes up, all 34-cent stamps (including the one of Lucy) will become "out-of-print." Collectors need to buy them now while they are still available!

The stamp was designed by artist Drew Struzan of Pasadena, CA, and based on a classic mid-50s black-and-white portrait (see above).

The stamp was "unveiled" to the public at a special ceremony at our Loving Lucy 2000 convention. A story about the unveiling can be found at

Lucy Stamp Unveiling.
