Fifty years ago this week -- with the premiere of I Love Lucy only a few days away -- Desilu started production on the 6th episode of the series. Titled "The Audition," the story concerned Lucy Ricardo's attempts to be a part of husband Ricky's nightclub act when the latter is auditioned for network television.
In real life, the show was actually a re-working of the material used as the "audition film" for I Love Lucy itself. Filmed via kinescope on March 2, 1951 (Desi Arnaz's 34th birthday!), that audition was staged in a converted CBS Radio studio using make-shift props and scenery (see photo below, left). Nevertheless, the magic showed through, and CBS bought the show for its 1951-52 season.
