"Keep Jigglin' Peggy..."
Fifty years ago this week, on Thursday, January 18, 1952, Desilu filmed the "Young Fans" episode of I Love Lucy. The now classic episode featured guest appearances by Janet Waldo -- radio's Corliss Archer -- and Richard Crenna -- who played "Walter Denton" on radio's Our Miss Brooks. (Crenna would return to Desilu a couple of weeks later to film the pilot for the TV version of Brooks.) Even the script had its roots in radio: "Young Fans" was actually a rewrite of the very first episode of My Favorite Husband to be written by Bob Carroll Jr. and Madelyn Pugh back in August of 1948.
The story, of course, concerned Lucy and Ricky's efforts to discourage the interests of a couple of neighborhood teens -- who had developed crushes on them! When all else fails, the Ricardos dress up as octogenarians!
Janet Waldo (who played Peggy Dawson) wore a coat and oversized outfits in this episode -- to hide the fact that in real life (as the wife of playwright Robert E. Lee) she was pregnant!
Janet and Richard have remained close friends over the years, and today are neighbors in suburban Los Angeles. They were among the special guests appearing in our banquet show at the Loving Lucy 2001 Convention celebrating the 50th Anniversary of I Love Lucy.
