By mid-September of each year that I Love Lucy was in production, Desilu was "back in harness" and creating some of TV's most memorable laughs. Forty-nine years ago this week, for example, "The Girls Go Into Business," the first episode to be filmed for Lucy's third season went before the cameras...
The plot concerned Lucy and Ethel's attempt to get rich by buying a local dress shop -- without telling their husbands. Featured in the cast was veteran character actress Mabel Paige, who had had a distinguished career on the stage and in motion pictures. Sadly, this would be one of Ms. Paige's final performances -- she died a few months later at the age of 74.
This was also the week that Lucy had been accused of being a Communist -- an accusation that could have very easily ended her whole career. The lady was exonerated only a few hours before this episode was filmed, on Friday, September 11. The next day, the Arnazes held a press conference at their home in Chatsworth.
