It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Lucy!
Lucy wants Little Ricky's fifth birthday party to be super-special, and asks big Ricky to get Superman to appear as their special guest. She jumps the gun and tells everyone -- only to discover Superman had another engagement. She decides to take matters into her own hands, and appear at the party herself, dressed as the caped crusader. The real Superman, happily, shows up just in time -- but Lucy's trapped out on the ledge and misses the party.
"Lucy and Superman," episode #166 of I Love Lucy, was filmed by Desilu 46 years ago this week, on Thursday, November 15, 1956. It was telecast by CBS two months later, on January 14, 1957. George Reeves, who had starred in the Superman adventure series since 1951, appeared as Superman -- but for some reason was not given billing.
