Ricky is staging a Gay Nineties revue at the Tropicana, and, even though the baby's on the way, Lucy wants to be in the show. Dressed in a non-revealing hooped skirt, Lucy auditions to "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," with Ethel as her partner -- but Ricky says no. He invites the Mertzes, however, to join him in an old-fashioned barbershop quartet. Spotting her chance, Lucy finagles her way into the act -- by hiding in the barber chair.
"Lucy's Show Biz Swan Song" was filmed 51 years ago this week, on Friday, October 17, 1952. It was telecast by CBS two months later, on December 22. Unlike most Lucy episodes, which tended to run longer than the prescribed 25-30 minute running time, this show actually ran short -- by about 3 minutes. Desi Arnaz immediately called his old friend Pepito, the Spanish Clown, and asked him to do a short routine that could be edited into the audition scenes of this show. Guess what usually gets edited OUT today when local stations decide to add more commercial time!
