Dear Fellow Lucyfans:

Remembering Fred Ball

Am sorry to report that Lucille Ball's brother Fred passed away this morning (February 5), at his home in Cottonwood, Arizona. He was 91.

Mr. Ball was born on July 17, 1915, in Jamestown, the son of Henry and Desiree (Hunt) Ball, and younger brother of comedienne Lucille Ball. He left Jamestown to join his sister in California in the 1930’s, where he later traveled with his brother-in-law Desi Arnaz and his band and worked at Desilu Productions, the studio that produced "Mission Impossible," "Star Trek," and "The Untouchables," as well as "I Love Lucy". In recent years, he and his wife Zo operated a motel in Cottonwood.

Mr. Ball is survived by his wife, Zo, who joined him on his most recent visit to Jamestown in May of 2005. Also surviving are his children, Pamela Ball Von Pinnon, Melissa LeBritton, April Jackson, and Geoffrey Ball; grandchildren John and Lisa Beckwith, Jessica Rolnick-Barker, Brenton and Trenton Jackson, Brandon and Brooke-Lynn Ball; several great-grandchildren; nephew Desi Arnaz, Jr., and niece, Lucie Arnaz, and their families.

From her home in New York City, Lucie Arnaz said, “It was always special to us that Uncle Fred and I shared the same birthday. In addition to being my mother’s brother, he was also a close friend of my father. I like to think that they are all enjoying a wonderful reunion right now.”

Mr. Ball had requested that his ashes be interred in Jamestown’s Lake View Cemetery along with his sister, parents, grandparents and other family.

Here are a few pictures. The first is of Fred with his cousin Cleo and wife Zo, taken at the Loving Lucy 2001 Convention in Burbank, CA. The black-and-white photo below it is of Lucy and Fred at the Los Angeles train station, taken as Lucy and Desi left on a cross-country publicity tour for "Forever, Darling" (1956). The color photo next to it was taken at Fred and Zo's wedding:

"I Love Lucy" to Be Saluted on "TV Land Awards"

At long last, I Love Lucy will be the subject of an official salute on this year's "TV Land Awards," coming up in April. Both Lucie Arnaz and Desi Jr. are expected to participate. The news was "leaked" last week on national television when the Awards-show hostess, Kelly Ripa, mentioned it on the morning show she co-hosts with Regis Philbin. We will have more information as we get closer to the broadcast -- or whenever Kelly "leaks" more details... Stay tuned!

Legacy of Laughter Seminar in Nevada

The third in a series of "Legacy of Laughter" seminars presented by the Lucy-Desi Center of Jamestown, NY., will be held in Boulder City, Nevada, on Saturday, March 3.

The event -- which explores the healing power of comedy -- will be hosted by Center president, Lucie Arnaz. Appearing on the panel will be her brother, Desi Arnaz Jr., actor Sean Astin, and drug-and-alcohol intervention counselor Jim Dunnigan.

Seating is limited. All seats are $20. For ticket information, call the Historic Boulder Theatre at (702) 293-1161. For more information, visit:

"STAR NOTES" Requests Your Input

As announced here a couple of weeks ago, "Star Notes," a new weekly radio magazine celebrating the life and career of Lucille Ball, will premiere next month on Shokus Internet Radio. The show will be presented "live" every Saturday afternoon -- 1-3PM Pacific Time; 4-6PM Eastern Time. Repeats will air daily: Sundays 8-10AM (Pacific Time); and Monday-thru-Friday 1-3PM (Pacific Time). The show premieres Saturday. February 17.

Each program will include many of the features that were once part of our "Star Notes" magazine -- news updates, trivia contests (with prizes!), a question-and-answer forum, tips on collecting (what's good, what one should be wary of) -- plus elements that radio can add: "live" in-studio interviews with celebrities, sound bites, classic audio recordings, etc. Saturday listeners will have an opportunity to call in and ask questions of our guests.

Your assignment, at this point -- should you wish to accept it (as they used to say on Desilu's "Mission: Impossible") -- is to think up and send us questions that you would like to have answered on the air during the "Dear Answer Man" segment of our program. You can e-mail questions to:

Again, the show premieres Saturday, February 17. "STAR NOTES" -- and all of the Shokus Internet Radio offerings -- can be accessed from your computer at:

Have a great week everybody!
