Dear Fellow Lucyfans:
Sneak-Peek at New Lucy-Desi Museum Site
Among the many events planned for "Lucy's Birthday Celebration" weekend (August 1-3) in Jamestown, New York, will be a sneak-peek at the new, expanded Lucy-Desi Museum located at 10 West Third Street in downtown Jamestown. Here's an artist's rendering of the new museum:
The Museum Members Only Party on Friday, August 1, 8-9:30 am, will include not only the first viewing of the new facility but also refreshments and special gift shop discounts. Non-members can join at the door for this free event.
With eight distinct galleries, six screening opportunities, and Lucille Ball’s monogrammed 1972 gold Mercedes-Benz, the new Lucy-Desi Museum is a must-see! Visitors will learn about the early lives of The First Couple of Comedy, see the piano from Lucy’s grade school in Celoron, enjoy the beautiful gowns and costumes from her wardrobe, see paintings and photographs that once hung in Lucy and Desi’s home in Beverly Hills, view movie posters from Lucy’s extensive big screen career, and much more.
The 40+ events festival weekend will also be the last opportunity to visit the original Lucy-Desi Museum at 212 Pine Street that opened in May, 1996. Highlights of its current exhibit, “Lucy & Desi: Memories & Mementos,” include the first of four Emmy Awards Lucille Ball received, her ostrich feather-trimmed black peignoir, and original photos taken during Desi’s 1976 appearance on the first season of Saturday Night Live. After the festival, the permanent exhibits in the original Museum will be moved into one gallery at the new location.
The new Museum will be open to the public for an admission fee at 2 pm Friday afternoon, August 1. Festival visitors can purchase a pass that will admit them to all three facilities – the original Lucy-Desi Museum, the new Lucy-Desi Museum, and the Desilu Playhouse – throughout the entire weekend. Separate admissions are available for each of the facilities, with a special festival rate for the new Museum during the festival weekend. Admission to the two Lucy-Desi Museums is free to members, and Desilu Playhouse admission is discounted for Museum members.
For more information about all the Lucy’s Birthday Celebration events and how to become a Lucy-Desi Museum Member, call or visit the Lucy-Desi Center Gift Shop, 300 North Main Street, Jamestown, NY 14701, (716) 484-0800 (toll-free: 1-877-LUCY-FAN) or online at www.lucy-desi.com . The Lucy-Desi Museum at 212 Pine Street, the Desilu Playhouse at 2 W. Third Street, and the Gift Shop are open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
Lucie at Birdland
Our thanks to longtime Lucy/Lucie fan Glen Charlow (see photo below, left) for sharing with us some photos that he snapped last week at Lucie Arnaz's 4-night engagement at New York's Birdland Jazz Club:
The photo above, right, was taken July 17 when much of Lucie's family gathered at Birdland to help celebrate her birthday. Seen with her here is son Joe, daughter Katharine, and husband Larry.

FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS:
Jamestown August Festival
Actress Ruta Lee, character-actor Joseph Ruskin, and Vivian Vance's sister, Lou Ann Graham, will be the special guests at this year's "Lucy's Birthday Celebration" in Jamestown, New York.
The schedule of events, unveiled by the Lucy-Desi Center's Ric Wyman, also includes a luncheon salute to fashion designer Elois Jenssen (hosted by author Allan Glaser), and appearances by Lucy's longtime employees Frank Gorey and Wanda Clark, and by Lucy-Ethel impressionists Diane Vincent and Rhonda Medina.
For complete details, visit:
My partner Richard Brock and I are planning to attend... Richard will be at his piano for many of the events, and Ric has me involved in a couple of the programs, too... We had so much fun in May, visiting with old friends and meeting many new ones. I hope many of you will be able to join us in August!
Dann Cahn Memoirs...
Good News! Dann Cahn, the original film editor on I Love Lucy -- and later a director of various films and television programs -- tells us that he is back at his computer keyboard, writing the fourth (and final) installment of his "Lucy" memoirs, "The Best of Times." Dann hopes to have the article finished in the next few months, and will be selling it to interested fans...
As our regular readers know, Dann has been writing his memoirs in the form of "articles" for the past several years. He started writing them in the early 1990s as stories for "Cinema Editor," the official publication of American Cinema Editors, Inc. (an honorary professional society). When Lucy fans discovered them, Dann revised and expanded the articles, and illustrated them with photos from his personal collection. Each has been published in a self-contained booklet.
To date, Dann has finished three stories devoted to his "Lucy" years: (1) "The Beginning," recounting the start of "I Love Lucy" -- and how Dann was hired to work on the series. (2) "The Cuban Caper," which tells how Dann was sent to Cuba by Desilu to film special footage for the first Lucy-Desi special, "Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana." and (3) "Movies & Memories," which harkens back to the 1930s when Lucy -- and Danny -- were both starting out in Hollywood... and ends with them working together on "Forever, Darling" in the 1950s.
Dann sold copies of the booklets at the Lucy-Desi Festival in Jamestown, NY, over Memorial Day -- but also wants to make them available again to readers of this web site. The spiral-bound booklets are priced at $12 each or all three for $28 (including postage and handling), and can be purchased from Dann directly.

Howard Rayfiel Remembers Lucy...
Howard Rayfiel, resident counsel to Desilu Productions and later a vice-president at Lucille Ball Productions, has written a fascinating new memoir, "Where the Hell is Desilu?" (Photo left by Jean Ferro.)
The book -- subtitled, "How to Fail in Hollywood Without Really Trying" -- spans not only Howard's 9-year association with our favorite redhead, but his entire career in the business of "entertainment law."
Included are behind-the-scenes stories about the final years of The Lucy Show and the subsequent Here's Lucy series.
The book is available for purchase over the internet ($15.95 + shipping) at: www.lulu.com
(If the above link does not work, type into your browser -- www.lulu.com -- That will take you to a main page with a "search" function. In the "search" box type -- desilu -- which should take you to the proper location.)
